In a volunteer project by Maccabiah representatives in the US, eye exams were performed and eyeglasses were distributed to members of the Jahalin tribe. Today, the American Maccabiah hockey team was hosted there and gave the eyeglasses to the tribe members. Yesterday (Tuesday), the US Maccabiah hockey team was hosted in a tent by the members of the Jahalin tribe in the Judean Desert, to conclude the "Seeing the Jahalin" project. Due to the precarious economic situation of the members of the Jahalin tribe, Bedouin communities in the Judean Desert, the use of eyeglasses among them is rare. A fact that often leads to problems with literacy, social problems, orientation, and more. As part of the community outreach activities that Maccabiah representatives in the US conduct, about three months ago, private optometrists and ophthalmologists from St. John's Hospital in East Jerusalem, along with Maccabiah representatives from the US and the Friends of Jahalin organization, voluntarily visited three different communities: Khan al-Ahmar, Abu Hindi, and Jabal Baba. They performed 243 eye exams on children and residents of the various communities. At the end of the exams, about fifty subjects were identified as needing glasses and were invited to choose a frame from a variety of options. Some of them were even identified as suffering from cataracts and were referred to St. John's Hospital for treatment. In addition, a number of children suffering from complex eye problems were also identified and were referred to the hospital for emergency treatment. Yesterday, as mentioned, members of the US hockey team and a Maccabiah representative arrived to deliver the pairs of glasses and were received with appreciation, in Jamil's hospitality tent on pita bread and white bread.
